JOHN HARRISON
Documentary Filmmaker and Educator
I am an award-winning documentary filmmaker and educator based in Spokane, Washington (USA). My portfolio includes work as producer, director, cinematographer, and editor.
I was the cinematographer on the Oscar-nominated short film, KAVI, as well as the Student Academy Award-winning film, VIOLA: THE TRAVELING ROOMS OF A LITTLE GIANT. As Co-Director, Cinematographer, and Editor I was awarded the SIMA Impact Jury Prize and recognition from the United Nations for the short documentary WHEN GOD ROARS. Recently I was Co-Producer, Co-Director, Cinematographer and Editor of AT THE THRESHOLD, a global documentary film series that explores the enduring questions at the heart of religious life, philosophy, and spiritual experience.
With over 15 years of experience spanning both documentary and narrative film, I have worked across four continents and collaborated with crews large and small. Whether it’s filming in the CEO’s corner office, on a Hollywood sound stage, or from my knees on a small-plot maize field in Central America, I bring an eye for cinematic images to every project and know how to capture the kind of concise and emotionally complex material that editors love. My process prioritizes compassionate curiosity and aims to re-center the narratives of individuals and communities who have historically been marginalized.
I am adjunct faculty at Gonzaga University, and speak both English and Spanish.
